Whan Ich thenche on doms-dai
Whan Ich thenche on doms-dai
ful sore I me adred
Ther shal after his werek
ech man fongen med
Ich hav Christ agilt
with thoughts and with ded
Loverd helend, Godds sone
what shal me to red?
That fyr shal comen in this world
on one sonn-night.
Forbrennen al this middelerd
so Christ hit wol dight,
Bothen water and the lond,
the flours that ben bright,
Y-herid be oure loverd,
muchel is his might.
Four engls in the dai-red
blowen her bem,
Thenn comth Ihesus Crist
His doms for to dem,
Ne helpth hit nought thenne
to wepen ne to rem
To him that litel hath y-don
that Crist was y-quem
From that Adam was y-wrought
that comth domsday,
Mony of the rich men
that werden fou and gray,
And riden upon steds
and upon palfray;
They shulle att dom
singen weilway.
Ne shul they ther nought fighten
with shelds ne with sper,
With helm ne with brinie
ne with non other ger;
Ne shal ther noman other
with wis words wer;
But here almsdeds
her erinds shal ber.
They shulle y-sen that maiden
that Ihesu Crist ofkend,
Bitwenen hir arms
Swetliche him wend;
The whil that we mighten,
to litel we hire send,
That makd the wors,
so fule he us ablend.
They shulle y-sen the king
that al the worild wrought,
And upon the swet rod
with strong pins bought;
Adam and his ofspring,
in hell He hem sought -
To bidden thenn milc
to late they ben bithought.
Ther shullen the rightwis ben
on Godds right hond,
And the sinfull shullen
atelich stond
With her sinne y-writen,
that is muchel shond;
Alle they shullen hem y-sen
that livden in Lond.
To the rightwis He spekth
words swith swet:
'Comth her mine frends,
your sinns forto let;
In mine fader house
you is y-makd set.
Ther you shullen sngls
swetlich gret.'
To the sinful He spekth
so ye mowe y-her:
'Goth ye awaried,
with fends y-fer,
Into brenning fyr;
of bliss ye ben sker
Forthy that ye your sinns
out of this worild ber.'
Bidd we our lavdy,
swetest alr thing,
That she bere our erend,
to the heven king,
That for his holy name
and for hir erending,
That He our souls
to hevebrich bring.

Are we having a Medieval English theme party and no one told me? I'll have to find a big hat very quickly or risk looking silly.
Dennis, Francois, Melba and Smasher are competing to see who can wine and dine Lola Whitecastle and win the contract to write her memoirs. Can Dennis learn how to be charming? Can Francois concentrate on anything else when food is on the table? Will Smasher keep his temper under control?
If only the 28th century didn't keep popping up to get in Dennis's way...

Well, it's an early medieval English lyric on the theme of the Last Judgement, probably 14th century if I had to guess but certainly pre-Chaucer.

Must have been a nightmare to type all that. The Umlaut key is bound to Ctrl+345 on my setup.
Pity. I have no understanding of the word. It is not registered in my vocabulary bank. EXTERMINATE!

Its Andrew's way of showing off. He's probably sitting back in his huge black leather armchair, laughing in an evil, maniacal way at the responses.

I'm wondering whether this is the much longer sequel to Jeno's legendary "." thread.
However, Wayne's clearly right that this is clearly not General Discussion (unless Andrew wants to pop back and clarify his point) so I'm bunging it over to Crooked World. Belt yourselves in for the flight.

I think the point of it was that Andrew wanted to see who would "get" the message - what language it is, and to see if anyone could translate it.
Could well be wrong, though!
