Sara Kingdom's Husband
It's funny how things strike you after so long that never occured before. If Sara Kingdom (her name seems to be pronounced 'Sara' if William Hartnell is involved, and 'Sarah' otherwise) is Bret Vyon's brother, why do they have different surnames? She must be married, in which case what happened to her husband? Is he a Special Space Security Agent as well?
I just wondered if PSers had any theories as to if indeed she is married, and if so who Mr Kingdom is and why he is never mentioned?

Maybe she shot him when he burnt the roast. Space-age roast, obviously.

Maybe they're half brother and sister (one of their parents remarried)? Or one of them changed their name?

Yes, that could be it. I think our main conclusion about should be that it makes for a far less interesting thread than initially anticipated.

I like to think that she was married to some kind of nerdy Elvis impersonator who spent his days either surfing the net, or at Elvis-y conventions. He could have introduced himself, at the inevitable karaoke, as "Elvis - The Kingdom."
OK, OK, Andrew's sanity has left the building...

An alternative suggestion is that that far in the future, naming conventions have changed?
After all, at one point in pre-Christ Athenian society, you would have been known as "Dave, son of Bob", but then someone introduced reforms, and you'd have been known as "Dave, of Athens"
So who's to say that naming conventions haven't changed in the future? Perhaps boys take their fathers surname, and girls their mothers?

I just assumed they were given an 'agent name' & that Sara Kingdom wasn't really her birth name.
Oh, @Andrew & Elvis post.

Maybe she's named after a city called Kingdom? And Bret comes from somewhere called Vyon. You have to be called after where you live.

Because they hate each other? The fact that she gunned him down in cold blood in Episode 4 suggests they didn't always see eye to eye.

At least it's not a sleeper hit.

I always thought Sara was a fan of fanfan.

I'm listening to the story at the moment, and I love the way she turns from interesting, edgy character into innoffensive, cardboard cut-out the minute she boards the TARDIS. Episode 4 - she's a hired assassin, who kills her brother due to her loyalty towards the state. Two episodes later she's running round a film set gobbling champers with Hartnell. It's so realistic.

Given that we're talking about special agents a couple of thousand years in the future, perhaps they could have been genetically engineered and given their own agent identities, but Sara would think of Bret as her brother because they came from the same batch?

Incidentally, I love the way that for the recon, Loose Cannon did the scene where Sara ages to death into a centuries-old crone by using a modern day picture of Jean Marsh.

Am I the only one who thinks the phrase '"gobbling champers" sound ruder than it actually is?

My mum's friend used to be called the Gobblin Teasmaid because she made a cup of tea afterwards.

If it's all due to a naming convention, do you think Kurt Gantry was born on a gantry?

No.
But he was made on one though.

F**k knows where poor Rimmal came from then. A devious sex act, most likely.
