I think the bottom line is that "Mind" looks like better TELEVISION in monochrome, but when it comes down to it, it's a Jon Pertwee Doctor Who story and therefore should really be seen in all its gaudy glory!

There's an ongoing project to "bake" "The Curse of Peladon" in a big oven. I don't know if this is to improve the picture quality or just because someone has a grudge against the story and wants to eat it.

    That'll be Ian Levine, probably.

As Steve said, I too would love to see 'The Mind Of Evil' in colour, but as it stands, there is no colour copy apparently in existence, and so therefore I would be happy to see the best possible version available, and if that's in black-and-white, then so be it.

But only once every other story has been released please! And a good two years worth of intensive research has been done to ensure they can't afford to colour it.

Here's some Wiki info on baking tapes:

Tapes deteriorate because of a breakdown in the binder that holds the oxide atoms on the tape. The binder contains polyurethane, which soaks up water and causes the urethane to rise to the tape's surface. This problem is known as the 'sticky-shed syndrome' (see references below). Short strands of urethane were most commonly used in tapes (until it was discovered that middle-sized strands are better) and were good at absorbing moisture.[2] Baking the tape temporarily restores the tape so that it can be safely copied to another tape or a different format. After baking, the tape usually remains in good condition for approximately a month. If the tape re-deteriorates, it may be possible to bake the tape again

Of course, there's nothing to stop them releasing it in B/W then reissuing it in colour once they've worked out how to do it properly.....

I'd like to think they'd have more incentive to recolourise it if it was to get it out on DVD for the first time. If they gave in and released it in black and white, they might have a harder job securing funding from 2 entertain and justifying it for a story that everyone had bought already.

The thing with Mind of Evil is that I can pretty confidently say that no-one on PS has ever seen it in colour (or 'color' for Jeff's benefit!), so aside from a few minutes of epiosde six and a few photo's we've nothing to compare it to. So in a way it's quite natural to say 'I prefer it in black & white' because that's how we've always seen it ('prefer' actually being the wrong word to use as you obviously have to have experinced the alternative to say you prefer something to something else). It's true that this particulay story has a very gritty and thuggish realism to it and the B & W 'look' seems to fit in with that nicely, but all we can really say is that it looks good in black & white rather than it looks better in black & white.

As far as this process is concerned, if it turned out to be anything less than near-perfect original colour I think I'd rather see it just cleaned-up and VidFIRE'd in black & white.

I was just about to post a cocky reply saying: "I saw it in colour on transmission!"

Then i remembered we didn't get a colour tv until 1972.

Damn my selfish parents for mucking my smartarse reply by not buying a colour tv in time for Mind of Evil!

Damn your selfish parents for not buying an early video recorder AND a colour TV and taping it for us.

Could you get VCR's that early?

If you could they were probably about the same price as a car or a small house

And, judging by the heftiness of the one we had in the early eighties, probably the same size a car or house, too!

In fact, take a look at these beasts!

BTW I did think carefully before I claimed that no-one here had seen it in colour, and I did actually remember that you said you didn't get colour TV until '72!

There were reel-to-reel video recorders like the Sony CV-2000:

That's how some Steptoe episodes still exist, albeit in b/w & poor quality. But they were around, after all, that's how we've got The Silurians in colour

Well I definately didn't see it in colour - I wasn't born until Part 3 of "Survival". Adele Silva's acting induced labour.

True. The Silurians was taped on U-Matic tapes in the mid- 70s in the States, probably on one of those machines Ant showed.

Nope. We didn't get a colour TV until 1974. It was a Rediffusion set, and just in time for Monster of Peladon part 1.
