Not at all - I think many of us here are interested in the technical side of restoration!
I've actually been to the BBC Research Centre at Kingswood Warren - it's full of strange geeky men who wear scarves all year round and are locked away in laboratories all day.
I shouldn't be unkind though - they do a some really interesting and worthwhile work there.

Everyone's going to be really disappointed with this when, after 14 years of waiting, they finally get to see it and realise it's just the same old Mind of Evil that they already know with the same people doing the same things they always did in prison/military uniforms we already knew the colour of, with the only real new fun coming from finding out what colour knickers Katie Manning had on that week.

We'll have a better idea of which football team the Master supports (based on the scarf he wears as a telephone engineer).

Bloody hell! The results are pretty damn good. It's rather exciting that they think they might get better results from retrieving the colour artefacts from the B&W tapes than they would from the exisiting NTSC conversions.
Yes we might well be disappointed with them eventually but getting them in colour has got to be a good thing overall, hasn't it? Seeing these episodes how they were originally meant to be seen is a very good thing I think.
Sometimes I think we take technology for granted. The people working out how to do this are pretty damn clever if you ask me.

I think it's amazing! And it's got me very excited. The results are there, they look fab and that's without grading or manual touching up.
It's hard to believe they haven't set it loose on "The Mind Of Evil" already. They could be working on a colour version right now!
Calm down though Si. There's no hurry is there? It's probably wise if they let these boffins refine their results until they are as good as can be before loosing the Destroyer. I would be literally moist in my knicks for a colour "Mind".

I'd expect Planet of the Daleks or Invasion of the Dinosaurs would undergo the treatment first, as there's only one episode in need of colourising.

Let's hope it's the one set on Earth, not Spiridon first, eh?

Very impressive - as Si says, we sometimes take the restoration technology on Who for granted, but it really is amazing the dedication some people put in.

Despite some excellent results with the TOTP footage, there's some bad news:

I have now had the opportunity to try my process on a frame taken from an episode of Doctor Who. It completely fails. No (correct) colour is recovered at all from the entire frame. This is disappointing and very discouraging.

I knew it was too good to be true.
That'll teach us to get our hopes up!

Well they have only just started and it's early days for the process in general, so all may not be lost yet.

I'm a man who survives on impulse. The other day I was practically clearing a space on the video shelf for the colour version, now I just want to kill myself because it'll be in dull monochrome FOREVER.

Don't do yourself in just yet, Si - we don't know which episode was tested, and there's nothing to say it will be the same for all the telerecordings (TOTP was from a similar 166m b/w telerecording).
Chin up!

Anyway, that's enough of that little sermon. Let's try another one.
