Default The Deadly Assassin on DVD in 2009 Woah Boy!

Sorry, can't remember much of the extras list, but I know it includes a Gallifrey documentary as one of them!

I'm sure someone mentioned Tom, Horsfall and Hinchcliffe on the commentary too...

Episode 4 remains the single funniest episode of Doctor Who ever broadcast. Really!
Episode 3 is one of the most boring, dull pieces of padding ever produced in Doctor Who

I suspect I many be one of the few people who holds this view!

Still Peter Pratt is very good.

I think Peter Pratt's portrayal of the Master is one of the reasons to keep watching

I've never been mad on this one either.

It's okay but I was really disappointed in it the first time I saw it having heard it's reputation as an all time classic. I thought it was a bit of an old pot-boiler in some tatty corridors.

I swear I saw a clip of this story featured in a late 80s or early 90s schools programme about horror fiction or heroism in the media or something of that nature. It was the scene with Dr.Who and Fried Egg Eyes fighting over the thing that comes out the floor at the end. There was also clips from the BBC version of "Day of the Triffids". Someone tell the Restoration Team and they can try and include it!

That was a great show - it also had the "Computers are very sophisticated idiots" scene from Robot in it. I'm pretty sure I videoed it somewhere at the time...

Like others, I've never quite found The Deadly Assassin as good as it should be (if that makes sense) but it could be another quality release.

Shame, though, that david maloney's no longer around to comment on his stories.

I saw that too, in March 1990.

Well, at least there's Tom.... It'll be interesting to hear from Horsfall too, I don't think I've ever seen him interviewed before.

What with this, The War Games and Planet Of The Daleks all coming out, it's a vintage year for Horsfall!

It's truly the only story to feature the line "The Sash of Rassillon. Woah Boy!"

I've always liked this story, mainly because unlike Mr Hart, I love the 'padding' scenes in the Matrix - some of the best location filming ever, IMHO. And this story contains my favourite cliffhanger of all, the one where the loco comes tearing round the corner whilst Tom has his foot stuck in the railway points!

I always think that cliffhanger is vastly undermined by the fact it's some tinpot kiddies themepark mini train. Unless it's meant to add to the surrealisms.

That's how I've always interpreted it, and it works for me.

Well this was the first story I can ever remember, I remember the train track cliffhanger...but I thought they had skulls driving the train not that mask?
So I'm delighted this is being released on DVD and couldn't care less how it's aged. (Famous last word-No! Keep the magic alive!...keep the magic alive...)

EDIT: That's brilliant! When you look at the Planet Skaro forum menu, it's reads "The Deadly...Dino Cloud (Slight Return)!!!

I do enjoy watching The Deadly Assassin, but I have to say that it's really not all that good is it? The direction is pretty flat, Tom in part 1 can't talk to himself convincingly... and then there's the plot which kind of feels made up on the hoof - the business of 12 regenerations seems added in quickly to justify the Master needing a plan; the Master's plan revolves around him needing the sash to protect him from the blackhole, but also revolves around him assassinating the President who would be wearing the sash; the sights on the rifle are set so that it's impossible to shoot straight, so surely even a cursory investigation (even without the Doctor's help) would reveal that he didn't do it; the business about 'incoming Presidents releasing all prisoners' is absurd (imagine the internet furore if they had such a plot point today) and suggests that the streets of Gallifrey are always full of murderers, rapists, and the like in the days after a new President is sworn in; part 3 is padding in the extreme; etc, etc.

On the other hand, the cliffhangers are all awesome, and the music's great, and yes I really like it, but... it probably doesn't deserve its reputation IMHO.

Ever? What about the bit where the Old Time Lord wees into a glass and gives it to Tom to drink? As soon as he sips it he says 'My hair's curling!'
