Singles of the Year 2006
Was 2006 a vintage year for the pop single? If not for CDs then certainly for downloads, but what were your favourites? Leona Lewis? Nelly Furtado or Arctic Monkeys? Sir Cliff? Something obscure that missed the top 40?
Tell one, tell all...

In no order, I nominate:
Nelly Furtado - Maneater & Promiscuous
thankfully she's reinvented herself & boy do I like it! Maneater is thumpingly good dark-pop with a seriously cool synth-riff, whilst Promiscuous gives more synth/drum goodness and an even more infectious chorus. A lot of the credit goes to Timbaland, who is probably the best producer around (Pharrell's disappointed me a bit this year).
Guillemots - Trains to Brazil
beautiful, uplifting music which brings a smile to my face (don't forget the fab vocals & trumpet work)
Sugababes - Red Dress & Easy
Two slices of modern pop perfection. Red Dress has a nice fuzzy bassline (sampled I believe), and Easy with its electro synths is probably the sexiest song I've heard for years (filthy lyrics!), and the better of the two - great production from the guys from Orson. Best Chorus 2006 award, from Pip.
Jose Gonzalez - Heartbeats
Don't know much about him, or that TV ad, but it's a gorgeous song - I'm a sucker for finger picked guitar. I gather it's a cover, I must hear the original sometime...
Muse - Knights of Cydonia & Supermassive Black Hole
These guys are getting more prog with every album, and Knights Of Cydonia is probably the most overblown, ambitious and downright marvellous thing they've ever released into the singles chart. Supermassive Black Hole meanwhile surprised everyone - it was very Muse, but at the same time nothing like they'd done before. Incredibly catchy with a great chorus.
Keane - Is It Any Wonder?
Like Muse, Keane surprised everyone with their first single of 2006. It was LOUD! A three minute pop-rock rollercoaster that I like to ride every now and then. But the album boasts better tracks (sadly they haven't released them as singles). Altantic was download-only, sadly.
Goldfrapp - Ride A White Horse
A wall of synths, samples and perfect beats - and one sexy vocal from Miss Goldfrapp.
The Killers - Bones
Everyone goes on about When We Were Young, but that was bobbins compared to this. From a very dodgy album comes a great catchy song, effortlessly loveable with its incredibly cheesy keyboard and soaring lyrics.
James Dean Bradfield - That's No Way To Tell A Lie
A proper return to form for JD - handclaps, string synths and sha-la-la's, and the song's chorus is one that sticks in the memory.
Most of these songs feature some kind of keyboard/synth work, you'll notice.
That's cause I'm synth-mad.

I liked the new version of Eleanor Put Your Boots On by The Franz Ferdinand best.
And Crazy by Gnarls Barclay was terrific.
Si xx
I've just got my handcuffs and my truncheon and that's enough.

What happened to ITV's Record of the Year this year? I didn't notice it in the schedules this year - or did Westlife not have any singles released this year for it to count?!

ITV1 went with that crappy 2006:Greatest Hits instead. It was on Friday 8th December.
Westlife's version of 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' will be their next number one. Can you guess which bit of the song leads to them getting up off their stools? It's a difficult one.

Singles of the year?
Erm, Britney Spears now she's dumped her hubby!
Oh THOSE singles. You know it makes me realise how I don't listen to popular music much at the moment. I do look out for new music, but it's not always recent music!
After checking through my catalogue I guess it'll be Muse Starlight for me! Only got into them this year, so really all their stuff is "new" to me!
