Saga of the Exiles / Pliocene Saga

I just wondered if anyone else ever read this? They were a series of books written by Julian May.
They were a very influential set of books for me - a kind of wierd mix of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. A kind of almost mythological tale, but using "psychics" instead of "magic" etc.
I encountered them in my 16s. Reading was really important to me then. I was at Sixth Form, and I was hit with the first and probably worst bout of insomnia which I've always struggled with. This meant not being able to sleep until 2-4am, even when getting up at 7:30 (no wonder I was half crazed).
A lot of my sci-fi / role playing peers were also really into them, but post 80s I don't think I've heard of them again, not helped by a trilogy of prequels which really lacked the charm and charisma (George Lucas, why didn't you learn ...)
Anyone else read them?
Its something I'd like to reread, but I suspect aren't as good as I remember they are.Remember, just because Davros is dead doesn't mean the Dalek menace has been contained ......
